How to Format a Paper in MLA Style

MLA style is the default format for many literature, language, cultural studies, and humanities courses. Getting the layout right helps your ideas look professional and makes source tracking easier for your reader.

Core MLA Document Settings

Start every MLA essay with these settings:

• 1-inch margins on all sides
• Double spacing for the entire paper, including Works Cited
• Readable 12-point font (Times New Roman is still the safest classroom choice)
• Left alignment
• 0.5-inch first-line paragraph indent
• One space after periods

Do not add extra blank lines between paragraphs. MLA looks clean because spacing stays consistent.

First-Page Heading (No Title Page Needed)

Unless instructed otherwise, place this block at the top left of page one, double-spaced:

1. Your full name
2. Instructor’s name
3. Course name/number
4. Date (day month year is common in MLA, e.g., 13 March 2026)

Then center your essay title in standard title case. Do not bold, italicize, or underline the title unless it contains a title of another work.

Header / running head

Create a header with your last name and page number in the upper right corner. Example: Nguyen 1.

MLA In-Text Citations Made Simple

MLA uses an author–page system. The goal is to point readers to the exact Works Cited entry and, when possible, the page you used.

Basic examples

• Parenthetical: (Torres 18)
• Narrative: Torres argues that narrative silence can be a form of resistance (18).
• No author: use a shortened title — (“Digital Archives” 4)
• Two authors: (Kim and Alvarez 72)
• Three or more authors: (Patel et al. 105)

According to one critic, “the poem’s final stanza rewrites the speaker’s earlier certainty” (Morales 61).

If you quote more than four lines of prose, format a block quotation: start on a new line, indent 0.5 inch, keep double spacing, and place the parenthetical citation after the final punctuation.

How to Format the Works Cited Page

Begin on a new page. Center the title Works Cited (no bold, no italics, no underline). Alphabetize entries by the first element, usually the author’s last name. Use hanging indents.

Format supports argument. A typical MLA humanities essay still needs a clear introduction, analytical body paragraphs, and a meaningful conclusion. Use topic sentences that make claims, then support them with evidence and interpretation.
